Project Finance
Our project finance capability draws on the skills of our banking, corporate, energy, real estate, securities and tax groups, as well as experience accumulated through privatizations and public-private partnerships. We have worked on non-recourse or limited-recourse projects in a variety of contexts, including electric power co-generation and the development of other natural resources, real estate development, public and private-sector infrastructure financings and securitizations. Our expertise covers unsecured and secured lending, by one lender or in syndication, as well as structured transactions such as acquisition and lender offer financings, securitizations and derivatives.

Our broad-based experience in the sector gives us considerable insight into current market realities and the strategies employed to allocate, transfer and mitigate risks in the transaction. Our results-oriented approach and understanding of various sectors accessing project finance allows us to provide significant strategic value to our clients.

Among many other projects, our Canadian project finance expertise includes acting in connection with:

  • the $266 million financing of the Northwest Anthony Henday Drive highway project in Alberta, selected for the 2008 Silver Award for project finance by the Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships;
  • the $942 million financing of a power production station in Ontario, one of Canada's largest project finance deals to date;
  • the $518 million financing for development of the Harrison Lake hydroelectric facilities in British Columbia, the first monoline-insured bond deal of its kind in Canada;
  • the $479 million financing of a power plant in Ontario, selected as North American Project Finance Deal of the Year (2007) by Euromoney; and
  • the $329 million financing of a regional cancer centre in British Columbia.

Internationally, we have advised on a $450 million financing for a mine project in Russia and a US$1.3 billion public-private passenger rail project in Mexico, as well as other mine financing deals in Argentina, Guyana and South Africa, among others. We have also acted in connection with project financing for roads and public infrastructure projects in Asia, Africa and Australia.
